Search for Millicharged Particles at SLAC
نویسندگان
چکیده
Particles with electric charge q ≤ 10e and masses in the range 1–100 MeV/c are not excluded by present experiments. An experiment uniquely suited to the production and detection of such “millicharged” particles has been carried out at SLAC. This experiment is sensitive to the infrequent excitation and ionization of matter expected from the passage of such a particle. Analysis of the data rules out a region of mass and charge, establishing, for example, a 95%-confidence upper limit on electric charge of 4.1×10e for millicharged particles of mass 1 MeV/c and 5.8×10e for mass 100 MeV/c.

Narrowing the window for millicharged particles by CMB anisotropy
We calculate the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy spectrum in models with millicharged particles of electric charge q ∼ 10−6 − 10−1 in units of electron charge. We find that a large region of the parameter space for the millicharged particles exists where their effect on the CMB spectrum is similar to the effect of baryons. Using WMAP data on the CMB anisotropy and assuming Big Bang...
متن کاملSearch for millicharged particles using optically levitated microspheres.
We report results from a search for stable particles with charge ≳10^{-5}e in bulk matter using levitated dielectric microspheres in high vacuum. No evidence for such particles was found in a total sample of 1.4 ng, providing an upper limit on the abundance per nucleon of 2.5×10^{-14} at the 95% confidence level for the material tested. These results provide the first direct search for single p...
متن کاملNew bounds on millicharged particles from cosmology
Particles with millicharge q and sub-eV mass can be produced in photon-photon collisions, distorting the energy spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background. We derive the conservative bound q < ∼ 10 −7 e (as well as model-dependent bounds two orders of magnitude stronger), incompatible with proposed interpretations of the PVLAS anomaly based on millicharged production or on millicharged-mediate...
متن کامل5 v 1 1 3 Fe b 20 07 February 2007 A simple explanation of the PVLAS anomaly in spontaneously broken mirror models
The PVLAS anomaly can be explained if there exist millicharged particles of mass < ∼ 0.1 eV and electric charge ǫ ∼ 10 −6 e. We point out that such particles occur naturally in spontaneously broken mirror models. We argue that this interpretation of the PVLAS anomaly is not in conflict with astrophysical constraints due to the self interactions of the millicharged particles which lead them to b...
